Unify Energy Begins Market-Wide Half-Hourly Migration on 4th February

A Major Milestone in a Smarter UK Energy Market

Unify Energy is proud to announce a major milestone in our journey and in the wider UK energy market. From 4th February, Unify Energy will officially begin migrating its meters into Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS), making us the third energy supplier in the UK and the first and only small energy supplier to take this step.

This is not just an operational upgrade. It’s a clear statement of intent.

MHHS migration places Unify Energy among a very small group of suppliers actively shaping the future of electricity settlement in the UK. We’ve chosen to move early, investing in systems, governance and delivery capability so we can transition with confidence, control and clarity.

Why Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement Matters

Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement is one of the most significant reforms the UK electricity market has seen in decades.

MHHS modernises this approach by ensuring all electricity meters are settled using actual half-hourly consumption data, not assumptions or averages. This creates a more accurate, transparent and efficient energy market that better reflects how electricity is used in real life.

You can read more about the MHHS programme and its wider industry impact in our detailed explainer blog.

Why Unify Energy Is Moving Early

Becoming MHHS-ready is not automatic. Suppliers must demonstrate that their systems, data flows, processes, and governance meet strict industry requirements. It requires investment, technical readiness and operational discipline.

Unify Energy has chosen to move early because we believe:

  • Accurate data leads to fairer outcomes

  • Modern energy systems require modern settlement

  • Small suppliers can, and should, lead innovation

Starting MHHS migration from 4th February reflects the work already done behind the scenes to ensure we are ready for this next phase of the UK energy market.

What MHHS Means for Our Customers

Under legacy settlement arrangements, faulty or unreadable meters could remain in the system for extended periods, hidden behind estimated billing processes. MHHS changes that.

With half-hourly settlement, data gaps and anomalies are identified far more quickly, allowing meter issues to be resolved sooner and reducing the likelihood of prolonged inaccuracies.

As part of Unify Energy’s MHHS migration, non-half-hourly meters or any faulty AMR meters will be replaced with the new AMR or Smart meters, ensuring consistent and reliable data across our portfolio.

Half-hourly data provides customers with a far clearer picture of how electricity is actually being used.

This increased granularity enables:

  • More informed energy management decisions

  • Better identification of inefficiencies and waste

  • Clearer alignment between operational activity and consumption

Accurate data is the foundation of smarter energy usage, and MHHS delivers that foundation.

The UK electricity system is evolving rapidly. Renewable generation from wind and solar now plays a central role in how power is produced, but renewable energy is inherently variable.

To manage this effectively, the grid needs accurate, time-specific demand data.

MHHS enables grid infrastructure to:

  • Match demand more precisely with renewable generation

  • Improve system balancing and resilience

  • Reduce reliance on estimated demand profiles

This reform is a critical enabler of a more sustainable, flexible and decarbonised energy system.

One of the most important long-term benefits of MHHS is what it makes possible next.

With accurate half-hourly data in place, suppliers can develop more flexible and innovative tariff structures, including:

  • Time-of-use tariffs

  • Load-shifting incentives

  • Products aligned to EV charging and battery storage

  • Flexible demand solutions

While these options will roll out progressively across the market, Unify Energy’s early MHHS migration means our customers will be well-positioned to benefit as soon as these products become available.

Starting Migration on 4th February

Unify Energy will begin the MHHS meter migration on 4th February.

This milestone reflects:

  • Early investment in technology and systems

  • Strong data integration and governance frameworks

  • A clear focus on operational delivery and compliance

Transitioning early allows us to manage migration in a controlled, structured way, rather than rushing to meet a future deadline.

It also reflects the hard work of our internal teams, who have ensured Unify Energy is ready to operate in the next era of electricity settlement.

What Customers Need to Do

Nothing at all.

This announcement is for information only.

Energy supply will continue as normal. Billing processes remain unchanged. If a meter upgrade is required as part of the MHHS migration, we will take care of it. If you would like to learn more about MHHS or discuss what this means for your business, our team is always happy to talk.

Leading Change as a Small Supplier

MHHS is not simply a regulatory requirement- it is a structural change that will define how electricity is measured, priced and managed in the years ahead.

By starting MHHS migration on 4th February, Unify Energy is demonstrating that size does not limit capability. We are proud to be the first small supplier to take this step, and we remain committed to delivering a smarter, fairer and more transparent energy market for our customers.
